The Challenge

  • Twenty-nine spans across different terrain and infrastructure, including roads and the River Ouse.
  • The initial survey highlighted defects requiring further inspection, including suspected cracking and heavy corrosion.
  • Hexavalent chromium was present, so a safe system of work was needed to protect operatives.

Our Solution

  • Large MEWPs and an underbridge unit were used to gain access for the inspections.
  • Wet preparation methods ensured no hazardous dust was released while preparing the substrate for testing.
  • Eddy current testing was used where possible to reduce the amount of paint that needed to be removed.
  • Preparation, ultrasonic testing, weld inspections, magnetic particle testing and hazardous material analysis were all completed within the 8-week programme.
