The Challenge

  • Twenty spans across different terrain and infrastructure, including roads, rail lines and the River Avon.
  • A total of 5.6 km of gantry rail to be inspected.
  • Principal inspection in line with CS450, non-destructive testing and weld inspections to be carried out at height.
  • Only partial gantry access was available.

Our Solution

  • A combination of large MEWPs, gantries and rope access was used to inspect the rails.
  • Rope access was used for a large proportion of the works, avoiding delays from access restrictions and reaching areas over the river.
  • Eddy current testing was used to inspect coated welds, minimising the need to remove paint.
  • Ultrasonic testing was carried out as part of the principal inspection so the severity of any corrosion could be recorded. This turnkey approach improved efficiency and accuracy.
